Nadine Christensen 2016 NEW WORKS
Statement | New Works
Christensen is known for her intelligent approach to practice, making innovative connections across painted materials and methodologies. In ‘New Works’ for example, source material is placed directly onto the canvas, which she contrasts with meticulous painted trompe l’oeil. In other works, painted forms are developed through repetition, brush marks and pattern making. In another, the fine surfaces of her paintings are set against the heavy textures of exterior suburban house render and excavated detritus from everyday life.
A gradual and subtle unravelling of spatial coherence takes place through the work. As an artist, Christensen continues to surprise, delight and confound the viewer through her rigorous engagement and questioning. In this way, she opens new paths forward in the malaise of contemporary painting.
