Richard Lewer – Richard’s Disasters, a true story

Richard Lewer, Matt and I went surfing at Raglan when the beach was closed due to large swell. After a while, the waves became too much for us, we were exhausted, we stopped paddling and were swept way out the back. The surf rescue helicopter was unable to get to us as it was too dangerous in high winds and rough sea. I was so tired. I saw my life flash before my eyes. I felt at peace with drowning. We eventually came to shore five kilometres from where we entered. The police gave us a major dressing-down, and when I got home, my mother said I was white as a sheet., 2020 oil on aluminium, 80.5 x 140.5 cm
